Incredible Photos Captured off Singer Island by Hakai Magazine

Hakai Magazine, a multiple award-winning coastal science magazine based in Canada, has a feature story in this month's edition about the massive mullet migration off the coast of Singer Island.

The article is called "Mullet Mania" and it includes high-def photos of mullet and its predators all along the island. Photographer and author, Michael Patrick O'Neill, documented using his drone and underwater camera which allows you to view the sealife from a perspective other than the beach. You can see just how many fish there really are in the water by viewing the article here.

All along the Florida coast, the mullet leave inland estuaries and rivers and head out to sea every year. They spawn offshore in emormous schools, which resemble an oil slick when you look at the article's aerial photos.

In the early 1990s, Florida voted to implement a net ban, prohibiting the use of large and entangling nets near the shore, which has given mullet and other species a chance to repopulate after overfishing. After 23 years of the ban, the striped-back mullet have made a comeback. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say the ban was not a cure-all but it helped the population overall and minimized catches of non-targeted marine life.

Now researchers from many countries come to Singer Island to document and film spring migrations of mullet and its predator the black tip shark. Read more about the mullet here and see blacktip shark photos and footage from Singer Island here.

Alfred Hitchcock and Singer Island

Alfred Hitchcock, one of the most iconic filmmakers of all time, has a forgotten history with Singer Island.

Hitchcock's glory was revealed in the 1950s and 60s with his staple mystery movies like "Psycho," "Rear Window," "The Birds" and "Strangers on a Train." He also rapidly became a television star from his comedic introductions on the series "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."

It was rumored at the time that the celebrity had visits to Singer Island, which brought many of his fans and paparazzi to the area for a chance to see him and get his autograph. But Hitchcock only visited Palm Beach County one time in his life- and it was before his fame in 1939 with his wife Alma. So the question arises: Where did the story come from that Hitchcock could be found on Singer Island?

A man named Richard E. Decker decided to develop a business based off the famous director's stardom- a magazine he called "Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine." He used the name in exchange for a licensing fee, and from 1956 into the 70s, the fiction mystery journal became an award-winning publication and sold thousands of copies in dozens of countries. Can you guess the uncanny location for the main headquarters? The little town of Palm Beach Shores on Singer Island.

Decker never advertised the name of the company on the door because he knew people would come knocking all day trying to meet Mr. Hitchcock. Even with his "secret location," every week Decker had people tracking down his office looking for the filmmaker. Many thought they might be lucky enough to stop by on a day when Hitchcock would be there, however he never once went to the HQ of the magazine. Still for years, fan detectives traveled to Palm Beach Shores only to find that their Oz was Richard E. Decker.

In a 1960s interview, the Palm Beach Post asked Decker why he chose the quiet little island to run an international business, and his answer was nothing short of the usual "sunshine full-time," as he put it. He and his wife were snowbirds who got tired of the northern winters.

In 1975 the Deckers sold the magazine to new owners in New York, where it is still printed to this day.

You can check it out here.

Plus: In honor of Alfred Hitchcock's work, a special 60th anniversary screening of "Vertigo" will be shown in the following theaters around Palm Beach County this Wednesday, March 21st, where you can see the film at either 2 or 7 p.m.:

Regal Royal Palm

Cinemark Boynton Beach

Shadowood Boca Raton

The St. Patrick's Day Parade on Singer Island

The Palm Beach Shores St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 17th, at 11 a.m. on the south end of Singer Island. It starts at the town's community center (90 Edwards lane) and ends on S. Ocean Avenue. Head over to the 28th annual parade for a day full of floats, music, beer, food and fun

The idea to have a celebration on the island started in 1989 after a small group of friends went to the nearest St. Patrick's Day celebration, the Lake Worth Parade, where they jumped in on the march. They had so much fun they decided it was time to have one of their own in the town of Palm Beach Shores In 1990 they gathered a board of 8 people to hold the first ever Annual Palm Beach Shores Parade. The Grand Marshal, Mickey O'Brien, towed a decorated baby buggy holding a leprechaun behind a decorated golf cart. It lasted 15 minutes.

Today the parade has metamorphosed into a frolic including pipe bands, floats, the unique Mummers Marchers, lots of food, drinks, a DJ, raffle and more. Funds raised are donated to local charities and organizations.

The Brewhouse Gallery

Just over the Blue Heron Bridge, the Brewhouse Gallery is a trendy spot for Singer Island residents to go to. It's a unique place incorporating an art gallery, live music venue, bar and restaurant.

The Brewhouse is open Tuesday-Sunday in the afternoon and evening. It hangs art from 18 local artists, changing pieces every 3 months. The art is on display and for sale, commission free. The concept is to revolutionize modern art galleries- boosting foot traffic, exposure, and ultimately sales.

The venue is visually inspiring and a place to be creative and share ideas with new people. Besides art on every inch of the walls, there's a small stage for local bands to play, tables and benches to have a beer and relax, and there's food from 5:30 p.m.-close.

They carry 45 beers on tap from all over the world and from microbreweries around town like Funky Buddha, Tequesta Brewing Co., and Due South. There's also a full wine list and alcohol-free beverages like coffee, special sodas, and award-winning homemade sangria.

Every evening, Chef Leilani, a Hawaiian native, prepares incredibly fresh, island-inspired food. Her menu changes daily but frequent dishes include tacos with roasted pork or filet mignon (Taco Tuesday), coconut shrimp, pizza, pad thai, fresh guacamole, her famous crabcakes, and much more.

Aside from live music, there's always something going on at the Brewhouse. Whether it's trivia night, poetry reading, or painting classes, you'll love the vibe at this awesome spot. Next time you're looking for a new place to try, head over to the Brewhouse in Lake Park.

Blacktip Shark Migration Filmed Off Singer Island

Researchers at Florida Atlantic University captured the annual Blacktip Shark migration off Singer Island over the weekend.

The footage, which you can see here, shows thousands of sharks heading south toward warmer water. These sharks are often called the "snowbirds of the sea," because they migrate south during the cold months when water temperatures drop below 71 degrees. When the weather and water warm back up they will return north.

The video was taken right off of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park in North Palm. Blacktips are regarded as fairly timid animals and account for very few attacks on humans. In places like Georgia, South Carolina, and northern-central Florida, there are areas that have cloudy inlets and an abundant supply of baitfish. Those are the areas where there are more incidental bites on people. In the much clearer waters off South Florida, sharks rarely mistake humans for prey, according to Stephen Kajiura, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Elasmobranch Research Laboratory in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

Kajiura and other researchers say this year's migration video shows significantly fewer Blacktips than in previous migration seasons. “In fact, it was so low that we estimated the population to be about one-third of what we have seen in previous years,” he said, adding that tracking the shark migration isn't just about public safety, but also an important indicator of ocean health.

During the migration, the Blacktips sweep through coastal waters and sort of “spring clean," weeding out weak and sick fish, which helps preserve coral reefs and seagrass. "[The sharks] are just simply stopping when they reach their optimum water temperature," Kajiura said. "That might have ramifications throughout the ecosystem... you might have an abundance of sick or diseased fish here that are not being cleaned out."

That can create detrimental effects that trickle down the food chain to coral reefs and throughout our ecosystem. Kajiura doesn't attribute the warmer coastal waters in recent years entirely to global warming, but he does think it may provide a glimpse of what's to come for shark migrations in a warmer world. “We want to make sure that these snowbirds come back to South Florida, because if they don’t, it will have a huge ecological impact in this region.”
