Neighboring Munyon Island

Munyon Island is a small island situated in the Lake Worth Lagoon in North Palm Beach. The island is currently owned by John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, so park visitors can rent kayaks and paddle over to it to birdwatch, snorkel, or just hang out.

The island was originally called Nuctsachoo by the Seminole Natives, which means Pelican Island, as it was reportedly one of the largest wading bird breeding grounds in South Florida.

The first resident of the island was a man named Rodgers who lived as a castaway and made a living selling sea turtles he caught out of the lagoon in 1884. In 1892 the Pitts family bought the island and built a two-story house upon it.

The Pitts sold the island to Dr. James Muyon in 1901 who built a hotel there in a matter of two years. He called it Hotel Hygeia, naming it after the Greek goddess of health. It was 5 stories high, had 21 rooms, and attracted wealthy Northerners who wanted a relaxing tropical getaway. Dr. Munyon also bottled and sold his famous Paw-Paw Elixer drink here, which consisted mostly of fermented papaya juice. In a relatively unexplained accident, the hotel burned down to the ground overnight in 1917.

Since then, the 15-acre island has been primarily uninhabited. It is a popular recreational destination for Singer Island paddle boarders, kayakers, and boaters. The island has picnic tables and grills and is surrounded by clear water. It still serves as a habitat for many bird species, sea grass, and fish including sardines, snapper, and mullet.

Singer Island History: The Amaryllis Wreck

In 1965 Hurricane Betsy, a category 4 cyclone, hit Palm Beach County with 20-foot waves and 80 mph winds that sent palm trees horizontal.

The Amaryllis, a 450-foot, 7,200-ton Greek banana freight boat, was headed for safety at the Palm Beach Inlet. It was overpowered by massive swells that steered it straight toward the shallows off Singer Island. The ship was pushed ashore just in front of the Rutledge Inn, which is now the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort.

The enormous boat would take thousands of hours and loads equipment to remove from the beach. But for three years the Amaryllis created some of the best small waves in the area. The washed up wreckage attracted surfers from all over the southeast coast and Singer Island became the best surf spot of its time.

The boat was taken apart piece by piece by wreckage crews. It took three years to remove the majority of the ship from the island. In 1968 the West Palm Beach Fishing Club helped sink what was left of the Amaryllis. It was sunk in 100 feet of water off the Palm Beach Inlet to serve as an artificial reef.

Today, the wreck is home to a number of marine species and is a popular dive spot for scuba divers from all over the world. See videos of the Amaryllis and its underwater inhabitants including grouper, sea trurtles, and tons of reef fish by clicking here.

Singer Island is an area with an abundant history and has experienced big changes in recent years. Today, it is known as one of the richest locations in the state for its magnificent condos, gorgeous and clean beaches, and preserved natural environment, making it an exceptional find in the luxury real estate world.
Singer Island Marriott Gets AAAs Four Diamond Rating

The Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Resort amp; Spa receives praise and awards by many travel magazines and websites all year long. Their newest rating is a four diamond review by AAA. AAA reviews around 30,000 resorts and hotels a year, and only 6 make the four diamond list.

The reason AAA said they awarded the resort four diamonds is because of its luxury yet casual atmosphere on the always-tranquil Singer Island, also calling it the most premier travel destination in South Florida. Heres what AAA notes about the Singer Island Marriott:

This resort is ideal for a family getaway or a romantic weekend away from the norm. Families will enjoy the two pools, the beach and the kids recreational programming while couples can indulge at the spa, fitness classes, the pools and beach. Each room is steeped in an upscale contemporary décor while boasting modern technology touches. Dark woods, luxurious bedding packages, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, upgraded electronics and marble bathrooms are the norm in each guest room. Guest rooms also each feature a balcony and boast beautiful views of either the Atlantic Ocean or the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Marriott also has a great restaurant, 3800 Ocean, a favorite for guests and Singer Island locals. The hotel is an amenity to the island offering a great opportunity for a staycation.
