MacArthur Park Sees Record Number of Turtle Nests

2016 has been a record setting year for loggerhead turlte nests at MacArthur Park.

1,762 nests inhabit the 1.6 miles of beach just to the north of Singer Island. That number surpasses the previous record of 1,675 nests that were found at the park in 2012. Since loggerheads return to where they were born when they turn 25, that means the turtles that are currently laying the eggs were born at MacArthur park in the early 1990s. Each turtle can lay up to 125 eggs that take about two months to hatch.

MacArthur Park is not the only sea turtle nesting area that is seeing record numbers. Biologists at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center just up the road in Juno Beach are also reporting a record number of loggerhead turtle nests along their 10 mile stretch of beach. As of the middle of July, they found 11,710 nests, up over 1,000 from 2015.

MacArthur Park has a citizen science program where volunteers work with the park rangers to evacuate loggerhead turtle nests after the eggs have hatched.

New Marine Superstore Coming To The Area

A new marine superstore is coming to the Singer Island area next week.

Nautical Ventures will be opening its newest location in Riviera Beach on July 25th. The Riviera Beach location will be the company's third in South Florida, joining its original store in Dania Beach and its other Palm Beach County location in North Palm Beach at the Northlake Marina. The company said their decision to open another location so close to the North Palm Beach store was due to the expansion of the nearby Riviera Beach Marina and Rybovich Yachting Center.

"Our proximity to the new Riviera Beach Marina and Rybovich will provide area yards and captains with a convenient supplier for yacht tenders and service, especially through our partnership with Novurania and our extensive tender inventory," said Roger Moore, company CEO, in announcing the new location.

The Riviera Beach location will focus mostly on boat and tender sales and will offer several boat brands that aren't available at the Dania and North Palm locations.

The Riviera Beach Nautical Ventures store will be located at 1501 Broadway, just south of the Blue Heron Bridge, making it convenient for Singer Island residents.

The newly renovated Riviera Marina is about to get its first tenant

Rafiki Tiki is set to open this fall at the Riviera Beach Marina Event Center and will offer both indoor and outdoor seating near the Intracoastal. The restaurant will be locally owned and operated by Demetri Solloum. Solloum is a longtime business owner in the area. He operates a large catering company in Riviera Beach and also owned the Citgo gas station on Blue Heron.

"It has been our goal from the beginning of this project to provide opportunities for Riviera Beach residents and business owners, and we welcome Mr. Solloum to Marina Village with great enthusiasm,” said Tony Brown, executive director of the Riviera Beach CRA. “We have created a spectacular waterfront destination, and this new establishment will give visitors one more reason to come by and see what we’ve accomplished.”

The restuarant will have a similar vibe as the old Tiki Waterfront Sea Grill, which had been a longtime staple in the area. The restaurant will have 1,047 square feet of indoor space and another 1,591 square feet of outdoor space. The restaurant will be open seven days a week and will feature a relxed, island vacation type atmosphere with tropical drinks, live music, cool colors and flowers. The menu will be Mediterranean and South Florida inspired with a wide variety of vegetarian and international choices.

The first phase of the new marina was recently completed with the opening of the two-story Marina Event Center and Bicentennial Park. Rafiki Tiki will be the first of hopefully many restaurants that the city fo Riviera Beach has planned for the new marina. Future plans for the marina include a waterfront restaurant row as well as shops.

The new and improved Riviera Beach Marina is located just across from Singer Island, next to the Port of Palm Beach.

Cargo Ship The Latest Artifical Reef Added To Singer Island

The Ana Cecilia once brought humanitarian supplies from Miami to Cuba. More recently, it was used to smuggle drugs into the United States from Cuba. As of Wednesday, it will now be home to sea life just off the coast of the Singer Island.

The 170 foot cargo ship was sunk Wednesday morning after a crew unplugged eight of its portholes. It took about 15 minutes to seek the 85 feet to the bottom of the ocean and will now serve as an artificial reed, diving attraction, and underwater memorial.

"It gives me great pleasure knowing that a cargo ship once used to smuggle illicit drugs into our country is now being turned into an artificial reef here in Florida," said Diane Sabatino, director of field operations for Miami and Tampa for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Built back in 1972, the Ana Cecilia made national and international headlines in 2012 when it made a humanitarian trip to Cuba, the first documented trip from U.S. soil in over 50 years. More recently though, the boat had been used to traffic drugs into the country. In September of 2015, federal agents found 386 bricks of cocaine valued at more than $10 million aboard the ship. The ship had been Customs and Border Patrol possession until they recently decided to donate it to Palm Beach County to be turned into an artificial reef.

Before being sunk, the county added plaques to the ship's wheelhouse to honor several boaters lost at sea recently. Austin Stephanos, Perry Cohen, Fernandes Jones, Willis Bell, and Jaden Jones all had memorial plaques added.

The artificial reefs are frequented by sea turtles, snapper, and Goliath grouper, as well as many different types of algae and other sea life.

Local Market Raises Money For Education

Doris Italian Market and Bakery held a Food & Wine Gala on June 17th, raising over $1300 for the Center for Creative Education in Palm Beach County. The nonproit organization was created more than 20 years ago in order to strengthen the presence of art in classrooms.

“We were so excited to introduce our Wine & Food Galas to North Palm Beach for the first time,” said John Alfano, president and CEO the Hollywood, Fla.-based specialty food store. “Partnering with the Center for Creative Education not only let us raise funds for an incredible charity, but also gave us the opportunity to meet some of the great people in the community."

Doris Italian Market is located just over the bridge from Singer Island in North Palm Beach. While Doris is new to the area, it is not new to South Florida. Doris Italian Market and Bakery opened its first location in Hollywood in 1947 as a little mom-and-pop meat market and deli. Over the decades, Doris has become a premier specialty market specializing in top quality fresh meats, an authentic Italian-American deli, fresh produce, seafood, Italian-American bakery, catering, and a full wine department.

The North Palm Beach location is the sixth, and newest, location in South Florida and the second in Palm Beach County. Doris also has stores in Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, and Sunrise.

Fun 4th of July Weekend Activities Around Singer Island

4th of July weekend is a fun time to fire up the grills, get the boats in the water, and enjoy a long weekend taking advantage of the South Florida summer. If you are looking for some fun land based activities though, here are some fun things going on in the area this weekend:

Meet King Henry: On Sunday afternoon, you can meet, and learn about the habits of King Henry, MacArthur Park's resident snake. The presentation is free with the cost of vehicle admission to the park and begins at 2pm.

Fireworks, Fireworks, Fireworks: If you are looking for a good spot to watch fireworks Monday night, there are plenty of options to choose from. The famous 4th on Flagler in downtown West Palm Beach gets going at 5pm and features three stages of entertainment, art exhibits, food vendors, and more.

At the North Palm Beach Country Club, the day gets started at noon with the pool open and free to everyone. Fireworks will start around 9pm, and local band Making Faces will perform from 7pm-10pm. Food, drinks, and a full bar will be available throughout the day and evening.

If you are looking to watch a little baseball with your fireworks, then downtown Abacoa is the spot for you on Monday night. The Palm Beach Cardinals will be taking on the Bradenton Marauders at Roger Dean Stadium with a fireworks show after. Outside the stadium, there will be a Kenny Chesney Tribute Band performing as well as games, bounce houses, and inflatable slides.

Whatever you choose to do, have a fun and safe 4th of July weekend
