Waterway Celebration

Posted by Amanda Hicks on Friday, October 27th, 2017 at 9:33am.

Next Saturday, November 4th, commemorate the Lake Worth Lagoon with your friends and family. The free Lagoon Fest will be held at Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The lagoon, which runs 20 miles beginning at Singer Island and ending in Boynton Beach, is an indispensable estuary for humans and wildlife alike. It has been dredged to create significant ports like the Port of Palm Beach, which contributes $260 million in local business revenue annually, and also for the purpose of mixing salt water from the ocean with freshwater from canals to allow mangroves, sea grass, oyster beds, sea turtles, and 250 other marine species to thrive. In the past century however, heavy boat traffic, marinas, and a power plant have polluted the lagoon, and many organizations have been working to restore it. The purpose of the celebration is to spread awareness about the importance of protecting the estuary and enjoy all of the opportunities the waterway allows for fun. Enjoy live music on the waterfront, wildlife presentations, 40 exhibition booths, watersports, fishing, tons of kids activities, and a green market with 90 vendors, fresh food, and locally-grown fruits and veggies. There will also be a kayak team regatta. Form a team of 4 people, and race 1 mile down the lagoon, with each person paddling for a quarter of the mile. Kayaks are provided unless you'd like to bring your own and the winning team will be invited to an award ceremony. While the event is free, entry for the regatta is $100 per team. Check in is at 8 a.m. and the first heat begins at 9 a.m. to kick off the celebration.
