The warm and clear South Florida waters have more year-round snorkeling spots than just about anywhere else in the world.

The part of Peanut Island that lies within Singer Island, however, is a particularly great spot. The water there stays at a comfortable 85-degree average during September and there is always an array of underwater wildlife.

Peanut Island

Peanut Island is an 80 acres island in the Intracoastal Waterways that was formed in 1918 and was named “peanut” after the island was used as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. In 1946, the plans for the enterprise fell through and the name stuck. The island possesses two separate areas that are great to snorkel, one is a small reef and then a larger lagoon, on the east side of the island

Less than 400 yards from the south end of Singer Island lies an even smaller island named after a world-famous nut. Peanut Island, dubbed "beauty in a nutshell" is 79-acres full of history, clear water, great snorkeling, and lots of other recreation. 

Located in the inlet between Singer Island and West Palm Beach, Peanut Island is easily accessible by boat or even kayak for Singer Island residents. Those who don't have their own boat can also take either the Peanut Island Shuttle from West Palm or the Sailfish Marina Water Taxi from Singer Island. Peanut has three separate boat slips on the perimeter that are free for day use.
